HOW DO GEODES FORM?

What Is a Geode?

Whenever customers visit our showroom, one of the questions I hear most often is, “How does that form?” Usually, they’re gazing into the sparkling cavity of a giant geode.

I get asked this so frequently that I thought it was time to write an answer you can return to whenever curiosity strikes.

If you’re unfamiliar with geodes, they’re hollow rock formations lined with mineral crystals. They come in countless shapes and sizes and can contain a wide variety of minerals.

The best-known examples are probably amethyst cathedrals or “churches”—large geodes that have been cut open to reveal their glittering crystal interiors.


Geodes vs Thundereggs

One feature defines a geode: an empty cavity where crystals grow.

Without that hollow space, the formation isn’t technically a geode. Instead, it’s known as a thunderegg.

People often confuse the two, but the distinction is simple:

  • Geodes have a hollow cavity.
  • Thundereggs are solid throughout.

That single difference makes identification much easier.


The Most Common Explanation

If you’ve ever looked up how geodes form, you’ve probably encountered the classic explanation.

Gas bubbles become trapped inside cooling volcanic lava, creating hollow pockets. Later, mineral-rich groundwater seeps through tiny cracks into these cavities. Over thousands—or even millions—of years, dissolved minerals slowly crystallise on the inside surfaces.

Depending on the minerals present, the cavity may eventually fill with:

  • Amethyst
  • Quartz
  • Agate
  • Calcite
  • Celestite
  • Many other minerals

This explanation is absolutely correct.

However, it’s only one way geodes can form.


Geodes Don’t Always Form in Volcanoes

Many people assume every geode begins inside volcanic rock.

That’s a common misconception.

In reality, geodes also develop inside sedimentary rocks such as limestone.

Instead of gas bubbles, the original cavity may have been created when:

  • Fossils dissolved away
  • Shells broke down
  • Nodules weathered out
  • Stones were removed from the surrounding rock

Once an empty space exists, groundwater carrying dissolved minerals can enter and begin depositing crystals in exactly the same way as it does inside volcanic cavities.

Consequently, geodes occur in far more places than volcanic regions alone.


Where Are Geodes Found?

Geodes commonly occur in rocks that have experienced geological pressure over long periods, particularly limestone.

They don’t always stay where they formed, either.

Rivers can transport geodes many miles from their original location. As a result, collectors often discover them along:

  • River beds
  • Streams
  • Creek banks
  • Beaches
  • Gravel deposits

Because water naturally sorts and moves rocks, geodes can appear in places where no obvious volcanic activity exists.


Why Some Geodes Are More Valuable

Like most natural objects, not every geode is spectacular.

Some contain only a thin layer of crystals, while others reveal breathtaking interiors packed with large, colourful crystal formations.

Those differences largely determine their value.

Dealers usually describe quality using a grading system such as:

  • A
  • AA
  • AAA

Although grading is subjective, the general idea is straightforward: more attractive specimens receive higher grades.

If you’ve ever wondered why sellers keep adding extra “A”s instead of moving through the alphabet, it’s probably because the gemstone trade enjoys a little friendly competition. Wall Street does something similar with investment ratings—and we all know how modest financiers can be.


Why People Love Geodes

Of everything in a geology showroom, few things capture people’s imagination like a large geode.

Sure, you’ll occasionally meet someone who insists they only collect tiny thumbnails or faceted gemstones.

Personally, I suspect many of them are simply trying very hard to appear sophisticated.

Most people, however, can’t resist standing in front of a giant crystal-filled cavity and staring in amazement.

And honestly?

Neither can I.
